Day trips from Hue, described plainly
Hue sits between the former DMZ to the north and the Hai Van mountains to the south, with the lagoon on its coast. Each makes a day out of the city. This page describes what is there, how long it takes and what to watch out for. It does not sell or recommend any tour.
The options side by side
| Trip | Direction | Time | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMZ sites in Quang Tri | North | A full day | War history; long time in a vehicle |
| Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass | South | Half to a full day | Coast, mountain road, seafood |
| Tam Giang lagoon | North-east, coast | Half a day | Fishing landscape, sunset |
| Thanh Toan bridge and village | East, about 8 km | Two to three hours | Rural scene close to town |
Times are planning estimates including travel. Weather decides more than distance: from September to December, rain and flooding can make any of these a poor use of a day.

The DMZ in Quang Tri
The demilitarised zone along the 17th parallel divided North and South Vietnam from 1954, and the area around it saw some of the heaviest fighting of the war. Its sites lie in Quang Tri province, north of Hue. In the 2025 reorganisation Quang Tri merged with Quang Binh and kept the name Quang Tri, so the province now stretches much further north than older guides describe.
The site most visitors remember is the Vinh Moc tunnels in Vinh Linh, a village dug underground in 1965–1966 to escape bombing. About 1,700 m of tunnels remain, with a main axis of 768 m, on three levels down to about 23 m, and 13 entrances, seven of them facing the sea. Other stops on a typical DMZ day include the Ben Hai river crossing at the old border, former combat bases and war cemeteries; they are spread out, so the day is long and much of it is spent on the road.
The Canadian government warns that landmines and unexploded ordnance still pose a serious risk in Quang Tri province and along the Lao border. Stay on paved roads and marked paths, avoid open fields and ditches, and report suspicious objects. Do not pick up war debris.
You can visit independently with a hired car and driver, or with a guided day trip from Hue; this guide does not recommend operators. Whichever you choose, ask how many hours are spent driving and which sites are included.

Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass
South of Hue, the road and railway meet the sea at Lang Co, a long beach and fishing village on the Hue side of the Hai Van mountains, with the 800-hectare Lap An lagoon behind it. Beyond it the Hai Van Pass climbs about 20 km to the Hai Van gate at about 496 m. The gate was built on an older fort and expanded under Emperor Minh Mang in 1826, and was restored in 2024.
There are three ways to see it. The heritage tourist train between Hue and Da Nang stops at Lang Co and runs along the coast. A car or motorbike can take the pass road, which has the views; motorbikes cannot use the 6.2 km Hai Van tunnel. Or you can combine the two, driving one way and taking the train the other. The Da Nang tourism authority describes March to August as the clearest season and warns of slippery roads and fog from September to December.
Inland from Lang Co, the Mo stream (Suoi Mo) area is about 65 km from Hue, with forest pools that are popular in summer.

Tam Giang lagoon and the coast
The lagoon system on Hue's coast is about 15 km from the centre and suits a half day, usually timed for the late afternoon. It has no ticket and few facilities. The lagoon page covers it in detail.

Close to town: Thanh Toan bridge
About 8 km east of Hue, Thanh Toan has a 17 m tiled wooden bridge over an irrigation canal, a village market and a small display of farming tools. It is a short trip by bicycle or motorbike in the dry months and fits into a morning or late afternoon.

How to choose
- If war history is the reason you came to central Vietnam, the DMZ is the trip; accept a long day.
- If you are going on to Da Nang or Hoi An anyway, see the Hai Van Pass on the transfer instead of as a return trip.
- If you have a free afternoon and want quiet, Tam Giang lagoon is close and simple.
- If the forecast is heavy rain between September and December, stay in the city; none of these is good in a storm.
What day trips cost
We do not publish prices for tours or car hire, because they vary with season, fuel and the number of stops, and we do not sell them. Fixed costs you can plan for are site tickets where they exist and train fares: the heritage train between Hue and Da Nang was reported at about 330,000 VND a seat in October 2026. For everything else, ask for a price for the whole day including waiting time, and confirm before you travel.

Common questions
Questions readers ask
How long is a DMZ day trip from Hue?
A full day, much of it in a vehicle, because the sites in Quang Tri are spread out. Ask how many hours of driving a plan involves before you agree to it.
Is it safe to walk around the DMZ sites?
Stay on paved roads and marked paths. Official travel advice warns that unexploded ordnance remains a risk in Quang Tri province.
Can I see the Hai Van Pass from the train?
The railway runs along the coast around the mountains and has sea views, but it does not climb to the pass summit. For the summit views you need to go by road.
Is Lang Co worth a stop?
As part of a transfer between Hue and Da Nang, or on the heritage train, it is an easy stop. As a separate day trip it suits people who want the beach or a seafood lunch.
