Hue weather, month by month
Hue's weather does not follow the calendar of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Its dry season is spring and early summer, its hottest months are June to August, and most of its rain falls between September and December, when floods are part of normal life. This page sets out what each part of the year means for a visit.
The year at a glance
3 = good, 2 = possible, 1 = rainy season. Based on rainfall averages for Hue and the Da Nang tourism authority's advice for the Hai Van Pass.

February to April: the comfortable months
This is the stretch most planners aim for. Rainfall averages under 50 mm a month, daytime highs climb from about 25°C in February to 31°C in April, and nights are mild. Walking the Imperial City at midday is still warm in April but manageable, and the roads to the outer tombs and the lagoon are dry.
The catch is Tet, the lunar new year, which falls between late January and mid-February. Hue fills with domestic visitors and families returning home, some small businesses close for several days, and transport sells out. It is also when the city is at its most festive. Check the Tet date for your year before you book.

May to August: hot, and mostly dry
Average highs sit around 33°C from May to August, with nights around 24 to 26°C. Rain comes as short storms rather than long wet days, with monthly totals around 85 to 115 mm. The monuments are open ground with little shade, so the trick is timing: be at the Imperial City or a tomb at opening time, rest in the middle of the day, and use the late afternoon for the river or the lagoon.
Summer is also festival season. In 2026 the summer festival "Kinh thanh toa sang" ran from April to June, and the international arts festival week was held from 13 to 18 June, with evening events in the citadel.

September to December: the rains and the floods
Most of Hue's year's rain falls in these four months: about 351 mm in September, 520 mm in October, 445 mm in November and 250 mm in December on average. The Canadian government's travel advice describes October to December as central Vietnam's rainy season, with seasonal flooding in October and November and typhoons possible from June to December. Low-lying streets flood most years; the question is how deep and for how long.
Late October 2025 was an extreme case. Parts of Hue and Hoi An recorded over 1,000 mm of rain in 24 hours to 27 October, the highest 24-hour total recorded in Hue, and the Perfume and Bo rivers reached 5.25 m, above the previous record set in 2020. The city remained under more than a metre of water the next morning, the Imperial City's grounds were flooded, power was cut to over 306,000 households and businesses across Hue, Da Nang and Quang Tri, and Vietnam Railways suspended north–south services.
Keep two or three days of slack in your route, book refundable transport where you can, follow local authority instructions, and do not try to cross flooded roads or bridges.

What the rainy season is still good for
Not every day between September and December is wet, and the season has advantages: fewer visitors at the monuments, green hills around the tombs, and a city that carries on as normal between storms. September and early December are often workable with flexible plans. October and November are the months to avoid if your dates are fixed and your time is short, especially if your route also crosses the Hai Van Pass or includes Hoi An.
If you are in Hue on a rainy day, the covered galleries of the Imperial City, the Museum of Royal Antiquities and the food are better choices than the outer tombs, whose paths and steps become slippery.
December to January: cool and grey
The coolest months have average highs of about 24°C and lows of 18 to 19°C, with rain falling off after December. January averages 131 mm, often as drizzle. It is comfortable for walking, the light is flat for photography, and you will want a light jacket in the evenings and on the Hai Van Pass.
