The Perfume River and Thien Mu Pagoda
The Perfume River, Song Huong, runs through the middle of Hue, between the citadel and the modern city, and on to the lagoon. Thien Mu Pagoda stands on a low hill above its north bank. A boat trip to the pagoda is the simplest way onto the water; the evening music boats are the most Hue thing to do after dark.

What the river and the pagoda are like
The river is the axis of the city rather than a sight in itself. The citadel faces it from the north bank; hotels, cafes and the pedestrian streets line the south bank; Truong Tien bridge, first built in 1899, joins the two. Upstream, the river winds past Thien Mu, Hon Chen temple and the landings for the tombs; downstream it reaches the Tam Giang lagoon and the sea.
Thien Mu Pagoda dates from 1601, when Lord Nguyen Hoang, the first of the Nguyen lords, ordered it built on Ha Khe hill. Its emblem is Phuoc Duyen tower, an octagonal brick tower of seven storeys and 21 m added in 1844 under Emperor Thieu Tri. Two objects in the grounds are national treasures: the Great Bell cast in 1710 under Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu, recognised in 2013, and the stele of 1715 recording a restoration, recognised in 2020. It remains a working monastery with resident monks.
Expect company. The pagoda is on almost every city tour, and the boat landing below it can be crowded in the middle of the morning. The gardens behind the main hall are quieter than the tower terrace.

Boat options and prices
Dragon boats, painted wooden boats with a carved dragon head, leave from Toa Kham pier on Le Loi street on the south bank, and occasionally from smaller piers near Truong Tien bridge. You do not need to book a basic trip in advance; you agree the route and price at the pier.
| Option | Reported price range | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Private boat, round trip to Thien Mu or a short loop | 300,000–500,000 VND per boat | Leaves when you agree; price depends on distance and waiting time |
| Private ride for one or two people | 150,000–300,000 VND | Smaller boat, short route |
| Shared boat | 15,000–30,000 VND per person | May wait to fill seats |
| Evening dinner cruise | 250,000–400,000 VND per person | Meal on board, set times |
| Upriver towards the tombs | Higher; agree in advance | Most of a day by boat; road needed from landing to tomb |
These ranges come from an independent guide updated in August 2025, not from an official tariff, so check before you go and confirm what is included: the route, the waiting time at the pagoda, and whether the boat returns to the same pier. Most boats have no toilet.
At Toa Kham, people selling boat trips and music evenings approach visitors on the pavement. Local authorities have targeted touts and illegal combining of passengers there. Agree the price, the route and the length of the trip before you step on board, and pay at the end.

Ca Hue: music on the river at night
Ca Hue is the chamber singing of the old court and city, performed with zithers, lutes, the monochord and flutes. In the evening, licensed boats leave Toa Kham with a group of singers and musicians and drift mid-river while they perform, often ending with paper lanterns set on the water.
The rules set by the provincial culture department in 2018 required each programme to last at least 60 minutes, excluding translation, to use at least three traditional instruments, and to have at least seven performers on a single boat or eight on a double one. At that time 128 boats were licensed. The common complaint is not the music but the sale: tickets bought on the street can put you on a boat that only hears another boat's performance. Buy from a counter at the pier or through your accommodation, and ask how many performers will be on your boat.

When to go
For the river, the time of day matters more than the month. Early morning and late afternoon are cooler and the light is softer; midday on an open boat from May to August, with average highs around 33°C, is hard work. February to April is the steadiest season. From September to December rain and high water can stop boat trips, and in late October 2025 the Perfume River rose to 5.25 m, above the previous record of 2020, and flooded the city.
The river is also busy during festivals. On days 8 to 10 of the seventh lunar month, nearly 40 boats carry the procession of the Dien Hue Nam festival upriver to Hon Chen temple; in 2025 that fell on 30 August to 1 September.

Getting there and how long to allow
Thien Mu is about 5 km west of the centre on the north bank. By road it is a short taxi or motorbike ride, and the road along the river is pleasant by bicycle in the cool months. By boat from Toa Kham, a round trip to the pagoda with time ashore fills one to two hours. Combine it with the western tombs on the same day, or with the Imperial City in the late afternoon.
An evening ca Hue programme lasts about an hour on the water. Allow time to reach the pier and to agree terms.

Who should skip the boat, and when not to go
- If you dislike haggling: the price is agreed at the pier, and you will be approached by sellers.
- In the middle of a summer day, on an open boat with little shade.
- After heavy rain in October and November, when the river is high and fast and trips may be cancelled.
- If you want silence at the pagoda: mid-morning is its busiest time. Go early or near closing.
- If you need a toilet within an hour: most boats have none.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Do I need to pay to enter Thien Mu Pagoda?
No. The city tourism portal lists it as free to visit. It is an active monastery, so dress modestly and keep your voice down in the halls.
How much should a dragon boat to Thien Mu cost?
An independent guide updated in 2025 reports roughly 300,000 to 500,000 VND for a private round trip, and less for one or two people on a small boat. Agree the price and route before boarding.
Is a ca Hue boat evening worth it?
It can be, if your boat has its own performers for the full programme. Buy from a pier counter or your accommodation, not from street sellers, and ask how many performers will be on board.
Can I take a boat to the royal tombs?
Some boats go upriver, but the tombs are inland from the landings and the round trip takes most of a day. Many people go one way by boat and return by road.
