The places that make up a visit to Hue
Four pages cover the parts of Hue most visitors spend their time in: the walled Imperial City, the royal tombs in the hills to the south, the Perfume River with Thien Mu Pagoda, and the lagoon on the coast. Each says how long to allow, how to get there, what it costs and when to leave it out.

How the places fit together
The citadel and its Imperial City sit on the north bank of the Perfume River, in the middle of the city. Most hotels and the main restaurant streets are across the river on the south bank, a walk or a short ride away over Truong Tien bridge. The tombs are spread along the river and in the hills upstream: Tu Duc nearest, then Khai Dinh and Minh Mang, with Gia Long furthest out and on the far bank. Thien Mu Pagoda is upstream on the same bank as the citadel.
That geography sets the usual order. A first day goes to the Imperial City, ideally starting at opening time before the heat and the tour groups arrive. A second day goes to the tombs, by car, motorbike or bicycle, with the pagoda added on the way back or reached by boat. The lagoon and the coast take a separate half day in the other direction, towards the sea.
The river is the link between several of these. Boats from Toa Kham pier reach Thien Mu in a short trip, and some continue upriver towards the tombs, though by boat that takes most of a day and you still need road transport from the landing to the tomb gates. The river page sets out the options.
Which places to leave out if time is short
With one night, the honest answer is to see the Imperial City properly and one tomb, rather than all of them at a trot. Khai Dinh is the most different from the rest and the quickest to see; Tu Duc is nearest and the most landscaped; Minh Mang is the most extensive and the most formal. Pick one.
Gia Long and the lagoon suit people with a third day or a particular interest: Gia Long because it is remote and rarely busy, the lagoon because it shows the fishing life on Hue's coast rather than its court. Both are poor choices in the rainy months, when the roads to them are at their worst.
Day trips beyond the city, to the DMZ in Quang Tri or over the Hai Van Pass to Lang Co, are covered on the day trips page, because they take a full day each and need their own planning.
What these pages are not
They do not list hotels, guides or tour companies, and they do not tell you where to stay. They answer the questions that come before that: how far, how long, how much at the gate, and when not to bother. For the order of a two- or three-night visit, read how many days in Hue.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Can I walk from my hotel to the Imperial City?
From the south-bank hotel streets it is a walk across Truong Tien bridge; how long depends on where you stay. In summer heat or rain most people take a short taxi or ride-hailing trip.
Can I see the tombs by bicycle?
Tu Duc and Khai Dinh are within cycling range for fit riders in the dry months. Minh Mang and Gia Long are further and the roads carry trucks; a car or motorbike with a driver is easier.
Is Thien Mu Pagoda inside the citadel?
No. It stands on Ha Khe hill on the river bank about 5 km west of the centre, reached by road or boat.
Do I need a guide?
Not to get in. Official guides can be hired at the monuments for a fixed fee per day, listed on the tickets page, and audio guides are available at the Imperial City.
